Marshall Diel & Myers Limited is pleased to announce that their Legal Scholarship Award for 2018 is to be shared between Zantae Dill and Amelia Oatley who will each receive $7,500 to assist with the cost of pursuing their legal studies. Candace Paynter will also receive a bursary from Marshall Diel & Myers Limited in the sum of $2,500.

Adam Richards, Managing Director at Marshall Diel & Myers Limited said: “We are extremely pleased to award Amelia and Zantae with this year’s Scholarship. Both students impressed us during their work placements with the firm this summer. Each of these young women is extremely intelligent, articulate and astute. I have no doubt that they both have a bright future ahead of them and we are delighted to be assisting them in achieving their career goals.”

Amelia Oatley graduated with a Bachelor of Law Degree at the University of East Anglia this summer.  She said “I feel honoured to have received a scholarship from MDM. I have had the privilege of working as a summer student at MDM for the past two years and my experience at the firm has been so positive. I feel accepted as a part of the team and I feel supported by every member of the staff. The knowledge that I have gained throughout both placements at MDM has really helped me throughout my law degree. This September I will be studying the Legal Practice Course at The University of Law in Exeter and I am grateful to have received this scholarship to put towards my further studies.”

Zantae Dill is a second year law student at the University of the West of England expecting to graduate in 2019 with a minor in Psychology. She was a recipient of the ABIC Education Award and the Stephen Edwards Special Award in 2017. She graduated from Saltus Grammar School in 2016 with honours.

Zantae said “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Marshall Diel and Myers Scholarship committee for choosing me to be a recipient of their 2018 award. I cannot express my gratitude enough to the firm for believing in me and investing in my future. I look forward to completing my law degree in this academic year and will always endeavor to exceed the expectations of those who support me.”

Candace Paynter is a Berkeley Institute graduate and is starting her Law LLB program at the University of Leicester in September 2018.

Candace said “I wish to thank Marshall Diel & Myers Limited most sincerely for granting me a bursary of $2,500 towards my studies in the field of law, in particular corporate law. As I enter the University in September to commence my studies, I shall be buoyed by the confidence you have placed in me, and always strive to do my very best for the sake of my parents and all who believe in me including your good selves.”

2017 Recipients

Marshall Diel & Myers Limited is pleased to announce that Victoria Stephens is their Legal Scholarship Award recipient for 2017 and will receive $15,000 to assist with the cost of pursuing her legal studies.William Finnerty will also receive a bursary from Marshall Diel &Myers Limited in the sum of $5,000.

Victoria Stephens graduated from the Graduate LLB Program at the University of Exeter this summer, and will go back to Exeter in September to complete the LPC/LLM in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Law.  She then looks forward to returning to Bermuda to pursue her legal career and contribute to the Island’s legal profession.

Victoria said “I am very grateful to Marshall Diel &Myers Limited for awarding me their scholarship, and will work hard to represent the Firm to the best of my abilities.  The Island is very fortunate to have a Firm which is so committed to assisting Bermudian law students not only financially, but also in obtaining valuable work experience which provides a true insight into what the legal profession in Bermuda is really like.  I know there are many talented Bermudian law students, and as a result scholarships and bursaries are highly competitive, so I am very honoured that Marshall Diel &Myers selected me for this award.”

William Finnertyis a Saltus alumni and is entering the third and final year of his studies at the University of Exeter where he is an active peer tutor for the law school. At home, William is the Director of Membership and Mentoring at the Law Student’s Association of Bermuda and has kick started a mentoring program targeted at preparing high school students for law school and the legal profession generally. This is William’s 3rd consecutive year to receive a contribution towards his studies from Marshall Diel &Myers, having received the Scholarship award in both of the past two years. After completing his LL.B, Williamwill undertake the LPC in London and return to Bermuda where he intends to practice law.

2016 Recipients

Marshall Diel & Myers Limited is pleased to announce that William Finnerty is their Legal Scholarship Award recipient for 2016 and will receive $15,000 to assist with the cost of pursuing his legal studies. Taylor Braithwaite will also receive a bursary from Marshall Diel and Myers Limited in the sum of $7,500.

Both students receive their respective awards for the 2nd consecutive year.

Adam Richards, a Director at Marshall Diel and Myers Limited said:“We were extremely pleased to be able to provide William and Taylor with financial awards in 2015 to assist them with their legal training. Over the past year, they have both achieved fantastic results in their legal studies. In addition, William and Taylor have both undertaken work placements with us this year and have impressed ussignificantly. They have bright futures ahead of them as lawyers and we are delighted to be assisting them in achieving their career goals. Although the standard of applications for scholarships was very highthis year, the committee determined that both students fully justified being awarded financial assistance again this year and decided to continue our support for these exceptional young men.

William Finnerty graduated from Saltus Grammar School’s Graduate Year Program as Head Boy in 2014 with an overall GPA of 3.82.He has successfully completed the first year of his LLB Law Degree at Exeter University and plans to continue his studies before returning to Bermuda to pursue a career in law.

William stated:“I am beyond thankful to Marshall Diel & Myers for selecting me as the successful candidate for this award and for continuously supporting the law students of Bermuda in their professional development. I look forward to once again representing the distinction of this award to the greatest extent. I am excited to continue to build resilient ties with Marshall Diel and Myers”.

Having already graduated from the University of West of England with a degree in Business and Law, Taylor Braithwaite completed his Graduate Diploma in Law at the same University during the past year, finishing top of his class. Taylor will return to Bristol to attend the University of Law to undertake his Legal Practice Course and hopes thereafter to return to practice law in Bermuda.

2015 Recipients

2015 Legal Scholarship award recipient – William Finnerty

Marshall Diel & Myers Limited is pleased to announce the selection of William Finnerty as its 2015 Legal Scholarship Award recipient. William will receive $15,000 from the Law Firm to assist with the cost of pursuing his legal studies.

William Finnerty graduated from Saltus Grammar School’s Graduate Year Program as Head Boy in 2014 with an overall GPA of 3.82. Having successfully completed the International Foundation Programme Diploma in Law at the University of Warwick, William will now continue his legal studies undertaking an LLB Law Degree at Exeter University.

Each year the scholarship committee look for candidates that are personable, intelligent and confident, and who we at Marshall Diel and Myers believe have the right qualities to be successful members of the Bermuda Bar. William demonstrated in his application materials and interview that he possesses all of those qualities and we are proud to be able to help him with meeting the costs of his studies.” Adam Richards, Director and member of the Student Committee.

William plans on pursuing a career in law and returning to Bermuda to practice after completing his legal studies. In explaining what the award meant to him, William confirmed that he was “extremely grateful” to have been chosen as the Marshall Diel & Myers Scholar:“I look forward to representing both the scholarship and the firm to the best of my abilities. The faith that the Directors have for their scholarship recipients is overwhelming and will push me to achieve the best that I can in my legal studies.”

2015 Legal Bursary award recipient – Taylor Braithwaite

Taylor Braithwaite’s application materials immediately impressed the Student Committee, but it was his dedication and perseverance to becoming an attorney which was abundantly evident in his interview and which led the Scholarship Committee to decide to expand its mandate for 2015 and offer Taylor a bursary of $5,000 to assist him in his endeavours.

“I am honoured to be the recipient of this year’s Marshall Diel and Myers Bursary award. This award puts me one step closer to my ultimate career goal of becoming a qualified attorney.”

Taylor recently graduated from the University of West of England with a degree in Business and Law. He will now pursue his Graduate Diploma in Law at the same University. Taylor has played football for Bermuda at youth level. During his summer breaks from his studies, Taylor is employed at the Fairmont Southampton Princess where he works full-time to defray the costs of his studies. Taylor plans to complete his legal studies before returning to practice law in Bermuda.

2014 Recipients

Marshall Diel & Myers Limited is proud to announce the selection of its 2014 Legal Scholarship Award recipients: Ciara Burrows, Alexis Haynes and Jennifer Looby. Each recipient will receive a $5,000 award to assist with the costs of pursuing their legal studies. Having received so many high quality applications, it was extremely difficult to choose only one recipient so the Committee decided that they would split the award amongst these intelligent and talented young women.

Ciara Burrows recently graduated from Saltus Grammar School’s Graduate Year Program as Head Girl and Valedictorian. In addition to her exceptional academic achievements, she was actively involved in all aspects of school life and pursued many extra-curricular activities outside of school. Ciara was heavily involved in her school’s debate and public speaking programs. She has represented Bermuda at the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition and the Heart of Europe Debate Tournament. Ciara plans on pursuing a career in law after studying legal studies and economics at the University of Waterloo in Canada. In explaining what the award meant to her, Ciara commented that, “Being awarded this financial aid puts me another step closer to achieving my legal aspirations. As a Marshall Diel & Myers Limited Scholar, I look forward to becoming a valuable asset to the Bermudian economy in the future and benefiting from the Firm’s experience and strong core values.”

Alexis Haynes obtained her Bachelors of Commerce at McGill University with a triple concentration in Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Strategic Management. After working in the reinsurance industry for two years, she decided to pursue her law degree at Queen Mary, University of London. During her time at Queen Mary, Alexis was a member of the African and Caribbean Society, the Law Student Society and the Pro Bono Society. She served as an editor for their legal newspaper and law journal. She has always dedicated most of her spare time to her local church Restoration Fellowship. Alexis is now pursuing her Legal Practice Certificate and Masters of Law at the University of Law in London. This pursuit typifies her drive and determination, which have resulted in high academic achievement and a commitment to being involved in the community around her. Alexis intends to return to Bermuda to start her pupillage and her legal career. “I look forward to providing Marshall Diel & Myers Limited with a strong return on their investment. In knowing that success is not a gift bestowed on select persons but a direct result of the individual’s efforts, I will always continue to work hard and succeed.”

In receiving the award, Jennifer Looby stated that “I am humbled to have been chosen as one of the scholarship recipients. With only two years of my legal studies left, this award alleviates the financial burden of tuition and fees and allows me to focus fully on the academic school year ahead of me. I look forward to representing such a prestigious firm, who are dedicated to the ongoing development of Bermuda’s legal students.” Having been inspired by the civil rights movement, Jennifer wanted to contribute to justice in the community by becoming a lawyer.  While pursuing her legal education on a distance learning basis, she has been working as the Law Researcher for the Supreme Court of Bermuda.  Further, in addition to balancing a full-time and part-time job and being enrolled as a full time student, Jennifer is actively involved in the community including mentoring other young adults. She has demonstrated considerable intelligence, drive and civic mindedness. Jennifer is committed to returning to Bermuda to work while also providing pro bono assistance to the community.

2013 Recipients

Samantha Saunders was recipient of the inaugural Marshall Diel & Myers Legal Scholarship Award. She is a recent graduate of the University of London and will complete her legal studies at BBP University College where she will be pursuing both her Masters of Law and Legal Practice Certificate. Samantha plans to return to Bermuda to begin her pupillage in 2014.

Stephen Edward was so inspiring and impressive during his interview that the Committee decided to expand its mandate for 2013 and offer Stephen a bursary of $3,000.  He is a recent graduate of Berkeley Institute and will be attending the Law Foundation Programme at Bellerbys College.
